Great Article describing the Encinitas City Council meeting:
http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/feb/01/coast-highway-lane-reduction-to-go-forward/
But read the Comments posted with the article only if you want to see what a number of people think about bicyclists, mostly because of complete educational unawareness about cyclist rights ( and responsibilities ) on the road. I found many of those comments exasperating, but you have to realize that many people really think that way, and we all have a right to our own opinions (except when they're wrong ;) ). I really wish our DMV manual and tests devoted something like 10% to both a description of how vehicular law applies to cyclists, as well as 10% questions regarding cycling. If you don't take any of the classes offered by the League of American Bicyclists (next one is March 4, Oceanside), or read the stuff on your own, you are in the dark - both motorists and cyclists. Only one of the responders clearly was well versed in CA vehicular law and he tried patiently (vainly) to explain.
Mostly those people were against something entirely different. .They don't want change in Leucadia that might add one extra car to their parallel street. They use any excuse. A lot more comments were added to that but, on the whole only a few people were interested. A couple neighbors against.. and those trying to educate them.
