Title: NCCC Riders - Volunteers needed to escort RAAM 2014
Post by: Margareth Demery on May 29, 2014, 12:38:47 PM
Hello All,

Last year was a great turn out.  NCCC has been asked again by the City of Oceanside to volunteer at the 2014 RAAM â€" Race Across America Event. Our assignment is to escort the riders out at one minute intervals.

Tuesday, June 10th â€" meet at the parking lot north of the Community Center at 10:30 a.m. Check in with me this date

Saturday, June 14th  â€" meet at the parking lot north of the Community Center at 10:30 a.m. Check in with Pete Penseyres this date

We are to escort the riders from the Community Center (Oceanside Pier area) onto the bicycle path and ride about 7 miles east to College Blvd (Mance Buchannon Park).  Just need to maintain a minimum  pace of 15 mph.

I will be doing the Tuesday escort as I won’t be available to lead a NCCC ride or do the RAAM on Saturday.  If you can do both of the RAAM event escorts that would be great!  :)

We need as many volunteers as possible from our Club.  Sorry short notice, but I just got the info from the City of Oceanside Bike & Ped Committee this morning.  We had fun last time. On Tuesday, we can even do an early morning ride for a couple of hours before we need to check in at the pier.... Lets say meet up at the harbor parking lot at 8:00 a.m. and ride south for a bit and back to be at our checking in point by 10:30 a.m.

Let me know asap okay.

Thank you,
Peg

Hello NCCC - We still need more volunteers to escort the riders. The attached worksheet has all the riders in the different catagories.  Check it out and if you see someone you would like to escort let Pete Pensayers - cyclovet11@yahoo know and he will put you with that rider at the time noted. If you maintain a pace of 15 mph that will be fine as well.  Sorry, I won't be able to ride as planed since I crashed on Saturday, but will be there to do other support duties. CHECK IN TIME IS AT 11:15 a.m. Meet at the parking lot north of the Community Center.

Hope to see more of you there & ride safe,
~Peg on the mend...

Subject: RAAM Escorts?

Hi Everyone,

Next week Race Across America will leave from Oceanside for the 9th consecutive year.

As we have done for the past few years, we will be providing volunteer escorts to go along with the Solo or Race Across the West racers from the pier area to the San Luis Rey River Trail and out to College Blvd on Tuesday, June 10 starting at noon.

We will offer the same escort function for the RAAM teams on Saturday, June 14, also starting at noon.

The riders/teams will leave at one minute intervals and be limited to taking at least 25 minutes to get to College. Any rider or team getting there before 25 minutes will be placed in "time out" until the 25 minutes are up.  This will discourage racers from riding recklessly fast on the trail, which will remain open to the public.

If you can maintain an 18 MPH average for this 8 mile parade start with a likely tailwind, then please take a look at the attached start times and choose a racer or team that you would like to escort.  Many of the teams and racers are from foreign countries so if you speak another language or your relatives came from another country, please look at the racer bios on raceacrossamerica.org and then e-mail me if you want to do this and, if you have a preference, who you would like to escort.

Please feel free to post this on club web sites, Facebook, or anywhere else as we have always had more racers than escorts, especially on Tuesday.

Riders who have done this in the past have had great, or at least memorable, experiences and really enjoy the opportunity, then going home and checking on line to get the latest results as "their" rider or team races across the USA to Annapolis, Md.

Thanks!

Pete Penseyres
