For over a year now we (our Leucadia neighborhood) have been asking the city to improve the passage for cyclists and pedestrians on La Costa Ave, west of I-5. Efforts to date include a Traffic Calming Petition/bike lane improvement request signed by +40 neighbors in the immediate area, numerous meetings with the City Traffic planners, speaking at the recent Traffic Commission meeting, and more meetings and emails…
As you may know, this road needs help AND wider bike lanes to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists in a shared environment. This is a major corridor for accessing the coast from inland and from our Leucadia neighborhood. At present, there is no sidewalk and only narrow bike lane that both cyclists and pedestrians, families walking to the beach all have to share. It is very unsafe.
At last, we have the opportunity to improve the unsafe and narrow current bike lane and transform it in to a “buffered bike lane†to accommodate both cyclists AND pedestrians. http://vimeo.com/103182903 (clip of video of this road today)
Please come to this meeting in support of the Buffered Bike Lane approach. If you cannot make it, please send an email! We need as many neighbors and residents, walkers and cyclists coming out to speak out in favor of it please. While the approach may not be perfect in your view, it is a step in the right direction and what is being offered here by the City of Encinitas which we appreciate and hope you will support!
Meeting date is October 13th at 5:30PM. City Hall Council Chambers. See the attached. Please share this email with your neighbors and any users of La Costa Avenue.
Thank you for your support. Please call me with any questions.
Sincerely, Elena Thompson
