Title: Unsafe Bike Lanes
Post by: John Lowery on June 20, 2015, 11:17:09 PM
I was on a short ride Friday after work and for the first time in years I came southbound down N. Centre City Pkwy and been between Hidden Meadows and Escondido, right around Frontage Rd the bike lane pavement is all broken up and a major safety hazard. To keep from the broken parts of the pavement you almost have ride in the car lane. And on top of that the county of San Diego just paved part of the car lane and left the bike lane repair untouched. So what happen is I hit this major broken part of the road and it took out both tires at the same time. I almost took a major spill but by His grace came to a safe stop.

Please be careful and watch out for this part of North San Diego county roads!

If a bike lane is not safe, you are not required to use it.     In that case you should control the full travel lane.  It's not a car lane.. Roads are for everyone.  If there is not a bike lane and the lane is not wide enough to fit one, or the bike lane is unusable then you are not required to ride far to the right.  Riding the edge is not safe and would encourage unsafe close passes.

Controlling the full lane assures that motorists will change lanes to pass.

If you find an unsafe bike lane it's a good idea to report that to the Traffic Engineer in the city where you find it.  If they get an email in writing they usually fix it fast as they are liable if any one gets hurt in it.

Your local city Bike/Walk group may also be able to help as they have a relationship with the local Traffic Engineers.

It would also help to have a picture of the issue and send them a link to google street view of the location.   In Escondido you can contact https://www.facebook.com/BikeWalkEscondido
