All - I never wish to hijack rides that we have planned well in advance, but Roberta Walker, who heads the Leucadia 101 Streetscape project, is also an avid cyclist, was badly injured in a bike accident last weekend, on the very roadway that she and her group are trying to transform. We shouldn't have to wait for these kind of tragedies for action.

I personally plan to drop off my toy this Saturday then ride to the coast to participate in the Ride for Roberta (https://www.facebook.com/events/2126437427667489/?notif_t=event_friend_going¬if_id=1544636604281727) to help publicize the necessity for finally funding and implementing the new Leucadia 101 Streetscape, which has been in the works for years and was recently approved by the Coastal Commission. If anyone would like to join me, let's do it.
Thanks - Karl
Here is another note that David Nichols of the Cyclo-Vets sent to his club and all other SD County Bike Coalition member clubs:
Dear Cycling Friends,
As most of you have undoubtedly heard, a cyclist was recently hit by a motor vehicle while riding along the 101 Coast Highway. That cyclist was Cardiff 101 executive director Roberta Walker, a staunch advocate of bicycle and pedestrian safety. Roberta has been working tirelessly on making the exact location where she was hit safe for cyclists for years. Most of us have ridden along the Coast Highway, it is arguably the most popular cycling route in the county. We are all aware of the hazards of cycling while in traffic, as well as the lack of respect that cyclists in general receive when it comes to their rights to a safe route while riding. All of these things combined, offer a rare opportunity to make a statement in the name of cycling safety to the general public.
This Saturday, at 10:00am, at the Leucadia Post Office, 1160 N Coast Highway 101, Encinitas, Ca. 92024, there will be a “Ride for Robertaâ€
It is suggested that that all cyclists attend this event, that cycling clubs alter their normal Saturday ride to attend, that anyone who goes out on group rides alters their start point, that anyone planning on riding this Saturday alter their location, that anyone who have children attend, that anyone who has an interest in making cycling safer in general attend. It is a bit out of the way for many, but again, this is about safety in cycling… everywhere. Going a little bit out of the way for the future could make a big impact on it as well. It would be great to see everyone there, the statement that we make could shape the future for the Coast Highway and San Diego County in general.
