Title: ROAD HAZARD WARNING!!! - COAST HWY 101 - SOUTH OF THE CARDIFF KOOK
Post by: karlos on April 30, 2020, 05:07:46 PM
Three cyclists have crashed this week on wheel stops / berms just installed this week by the City of Encinitas south of the Kook statue (magic carpet ride) on Coast Hwy 101 in Cardiff. All three cyclists were taken away by ambulances. A triathlete is still in the neural trauma unit at Scripps Hospital - cyclist going northbound descending out of Solana Beach at speed. The stretch between Solana Beach and Los Olas Restaurants has exactly 2 bike-car injury crashes over 13 years (ZERO northbound) according to the statewide SWITRS database. If you think you saw exponential growth with the coronavirus, this is ridiculous if there are more to come. Please remember that the compromise when this project was approved, even given official NCCC opposition as well as opposition by nearly all cyclists of all flavors with experience, was there will be sharrows in the #2 travel lanes, both ways. Bikes May Use Full Lane signs are already in place and the sharrows will probably be the last thing to go down.

Since most of us are familiar with lane control southbound thru Leucadia and Solana Beach, use your experience and skill to just completely stay out of the dangerous cycletrack. The injury rate will go down hopefully. It is under construction now and so these cyclists may have just been taken by surprise. Touching those wheel stops even in the #2 lane will also take you down in a hurry, so don't even think about hugging the right edge of that lane either.

Please be careful in this area and take the safer car lane - the WHOLE #2 car lane.

Be safe - Karl

My bad. I copied and edited from another Bike Coalition person. Needless to say, I don't want to show photos. These were ambulance accidents and no reason to either share a personal photo, especially one in distress. I'll edit my post. Thanks for the alert, Lisa. The accident northbound out of Solana Beach is particularly distressing, because the cyclist was probably going at typical NCCC speed or higher. Just stay left, please, folks.
