Pick a route/race or create your own. Go ride solo then see how everyone else has done. A good venue for ride leaders to use as an alternative to riding in a group. Developers are local SD riders.
My motivation for using Strava has nothing to do with competition. #1 is the ability to track my mileage and elevation. I've also found it interesting to see the direct correlation of age with slower times (the older I get, the faster I was for sure 😉). #2 is I really enjoy seeing what my friends are riding, especially during this pandemic. #3 I enjoy the social aspect of giving/getting kudos and comments. As a social media platform it's more about accomplishments than selfish bragging, imo. Finally, as a software developer, good software needs to be supported with $$$. We can't expect quality services to be free. If you don't feel it's worth to spend less than you do on tires and tubes, then Strava is not for you.
I have the same feelings/comments re: RideWithGPS. They have an unbelievable business model of relying only on paid subscriptions and refuse to display 3rd party ads. They provide the best routing software by far, yet only 5% of their users support them with $$$s - 95% are freeloaders yet RWGPS continues to survive. Fortunately, NCCC supports RWGPS with our annual Club Account so our members have a fabulous route library to use.
You get what you pay for.
I subscribe to both Strava and RWGPS. This other app is a local alternative for riders to explore. Nice to have more tools in your box.
Righto, Paul. If I thought I could win a loaf of homemade baked bread, I'd join the other group, too 8)
