Title: Spokey Dokes - a little NCCC History
Post by: karlos on August 04, 2021, 03:34:14 PM
We just received a note from a former Spokey Dokes (now dormant MTB arm of NCCC) rider Skip Davis. He says "I was just reminiscing about some of the old guys who are gone now. I was moving bikes around in my garage and saw a set of Spokey Dokes on the front wheel of my old Voodoo Mt. bike. Carl gave them to me and made me an honorary Spoke Dokes member back in the 70's." I actually didn't realize that a Spokey Doke was a thing. Is that news to the rest of you? The photos below show how they work. Skip wrote "When you ride, they slide up and down the spoke and make a funny noise. When not in use you would slide them all the way up and hook them onto the spoke nipple."

If the Spokey Dokes ever get a new ride leader and become an active NCCC group again, we'll at least know what a Spokey Doke is  8). They were very active when I joined NCCC in 2002 with Sat & Sun MTB rides, special picnics, and parties, too. A fun group.

Get your Spokey Dokeys here (https://www.ebay.com/itm/124092612284?chn=ps&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A18ys83U0dRDWvg3u23D4hWA86&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=124092612284&targetid=1266006855835&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9031316&poi=&campaignid=12519036193&mkgroupid=130851359468&rlsatarget=pla-1266006855835&abcId=9300518&merchantid=114611729&gclid=CjwKCAjw9aiIBhA1EiwAJ_GTSkRr-SglCAgZZQNt2a-aseoFjA1IfEKk_L_1bL3i8iFpgxvfKcT9TxoCZJsQAvD_BwE) That's just an old ad, but you can google Spokey Dokey and find a number of places to buy. Not sure all have the original sound.

Wikipedia says that these were popular in the '80s which might be more consistent with NCCC history. Skip gets a pass on saying '70s, but a group may have existed then and then later combined with NCCC which began in the later '80s.
