Title: Club Review by New Guy Mike
Post by: AveMike on September 16, 2009, 07:09:42 AM
NCCC,
I wish to thank everyone for a friendly welcome on Saturday's ride. Everyone I met was kind and friendly even though it was early on a Sat morning.  I wisely did the 41 miler instead of the longer one and I think we rode every hill in San Marcos and Rancho Sante Fe and I believe we might of even ridden in Mexico, I really don't know, luckily I was following a great navigator and leader: Sandy.  Thanks Sandy you were awesome.  A shout out to John as well who helped me out twice when my chain came off, I guess I have to practice my shifting.  It was great fun and quite sobering in the safety arena when we passed the police cars and ambulance collecting a couple of riders who crashed (not from NCCC).  Outside of that if I had known we were stopping at two grocery stores I would of brought my wife's shopping list and killed two birds...
Thanks again for the warm welcome and I plan on joining soon!

Hey Mike,
Welcome to the show!! Last Saturday's ride looked like a clover leaf in Rancho Santa Fe. At least that's what we ended up with when we downloaded Deb's ride. I think in the end we just found the best way out of RSF back to OCRR.
It was fun though.

Hey Mike,  glad you enjoyed the ride.  It was my pleasure to guide us though.   I just followed the club issued 17 page route slip.  Jeff and the bike club provides us a good service with these route slips, saved me many times in unfamiliar countryside.

Well I have a theory on how Jeff plans the routes....

He gets his topo maps out, and starts at the first intersection.  Determines whether there are more hills to the left, right or straight, and of course chooses the path that has the best climbing opportunity.  He moves on to the next point and chooses the route that goes up hill, and so on.  He is the only guy I know that can find a route that returns to the starting point after 40 miles, but somehow seemed to continuously go up hill.    Double Peak was a doosey.   I am relative new to biking, so I am still adjusting to this affection to hills.  The real bikers in the group love this stuff.

In the case of the ride on Saturday, we ended up going on spiraling, concentric, overlapping, and figure eighting patterns to achieve the correct hill value.
It was comforting to see the same Rancho SanteFe landmarks two or three times, especially when you see other in the NCCC group along the way (going in the opposite direction ???).  It is good that we are all part this Orienteering club (hmmm I mean bike cub).

All kidding aside the routes are usually the best bike friendly options though the areas.  ...and again I appreciate the established routes and route slips.    I am working on convincing myself that hills are a good thing :-)
