Title: Let's help stop hatred against cyclists
Post by: Bike fitter Eric on January 07, 2010, 01:58:29 PM
Dear NCCC Members,

For those of you on Facebook, you might like to know that there was a group formed about 2 months ago promoting not just hatred against cyclists, but actual violence. The name of the group is "There's a perfectly good path next to the road you stupid cyclist."  Here's the link to their garbage "fan page." http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=235515394023#/pages/Theres-a-perfectly-good-path-right-next-to-the-road-you-stupid-cyclist/190080667052  What is particularly frightening about this is that there are over 32K fans of this group.  Yes, some of these members are indeed cyclists who had joined simply to post dissenting comments and views, but nonetheless, the large number of actual "haters" is disturbing.

Yesterday, cycling photographer Brian Hodes initiated a counter-movement in an effort to urge the management of Facebook to remove/ban these morons.  The "Remove this Hate Group!" fan page can be found here:  http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=235515394023#.  Also, an excellent open letter to Facebook can be found here: http://www.bikecrave.com/open-letter-to-facebook/

Our group now has close to 1K members (after just one day), and I urge all of you to join your fellow cyclists and make our voices heard - preaching violence against cyclists will not be tolerated.

Update 1/13 - Yesterday FB management removed the offending anti cycling site.  Thanks to all who helped make sure our voices were heard and not to be ignored.
