Title: Monday, Jan 2nd ride up Palomar?
Post by: Nerius Landys on December 31, 2011, 04:17:34 PM
Since I don't have to work on Monday the 2nd of January (because we get a "New Years Day holiday") and because I imagine some of you don't have to work that day either, why don't we do a ride together?  My suggestion would be meet at Kit Carson Park at 8:30 and do an out-and-back up Mt. Palomar South Grade Road.  The weather forecast for that day calls for dry and warm weather but windy.  I just called Mother's Kitchen to confirm that they will be open on Monday, so a full-blown lunch stop would give us a nice break.

Any takers?  Or, other suggestions?

Nerius - That would be all right by me. I also have an 8:30 OCRR route TBD listed on the Roadies page under Holiday Rides. If a few more reply here, I can change that ride to a Kit Carson start. Good idea - shorter than the pie ride and no blizzard in the forecast (74  deg and clear)!

I would love to go but I'm still recovering from my knee injury.

I'm not sure who is doing worse at this point --  me or my wife.

Well - since there is a vote of at least 2 for a Mother's Kitchen out and back (~66 mi), let's go with that. I'll put it on the Roadies page for a 8:30 am Kit Carson start. For those who either don't want to do the climb or want a shorter holiday ride, a left turn at 76 for a return up Cole Grade and Miller Rd is a good option. An even shorter option, with a Valley Center return via Circle R, is also available.

Totally awesome!  See you guys tomorrow!
BTW I'm surprised it's over 60 miles.  Seems like it would be under that.

If anyone plans to ride who is going to the Kit Carson start for the first time, here is a good Google map link (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=207022089955865955374.0004b57ebb6c1fea084e9) (always available under "Roadies > Ride start directions")

What time did you get to the store?  I was going to try to meet you there about 11 but underestimated my trip time.  I got there at 12:45.

I went up Harrison Gr.  Only saw one other cyclist.

Sorry  we missed you, Frank. I was last up, behind Nerius and Jim, at about 11:50. Nerius ate his big breakfast, finishing about 10 min. after I got to the top, and then we headed down. Some day, we need to plan  on everyone doing  Nate Harrison, which was scheduled as a joint Spokey Dokes 2007 ride, cancelled because of fire damage. I like that way. Did you ride fat tires?

I rode my "All-Rounder" bike with a 26-32 low gear and 35mm touring tires with the pressure lowered to 50 psi.

That a Christmas present, Frank? No wonder it took so long. With a 26/32, you're pushing  Burt  8) I want one, too...

All I got for Christmas was a lump of coal.

A nice insurance company  bought me the  bike after one of their clients right hooked me and totalled my Cross Check.
