Club Riders Welcome:
A few of us will be riding Mike Berry's San Luis Rey Revival this Saturday, July 17. This route goes from O'side to Lake Henshaw and return via Cole Grade Road. 113 miles.

We'll leave from O'side Pier before 06:00 to meet up with Chuck Bramwell's gruppo at the end of the SLR Bike Path at 06:30. We may ride with them to So. Grade turn. They are riding a Century to Palomar Mtn.
We will also take Holley Lane/Old River Road to bypass the nasty construction on Hwy. 76.

Full info, routeslip and video at:

There are adequate Control stops for water, etc. so plan your hydration wisely!

This isn't a race.

thanks,

Yes, the ride went off as planned. Heat or no heat!

First off, a big kudoz to Jaime Gurrola, Steve Smart & John
Mestemacher. They didn't shy away from a real tough Permanent under
sweltering skies! No NCCC riders as planned~

We left Oceanside Pier shortly before 06:00 for the
planned meeting with CBramwell's Century riders at 06:35 near College
Blvd at Bike Paths end. George Vargas showed up at 6:30 and rode up to
Carl's Jr. to see where they were. Being timely Randos, we left alone
at 06:35. It was nice and cool till till the climbing started!
Later saw George at Stage Stop Market in Pauma Valley and he indicated
that the Century riders got a late start. We passed one on the way
back along Camino del Rey and he looked "cooked". It's no wonder, they
had a toughie too!

On the way up from Stage Stop Market, I did see 4 or 5  NCCC riders coming down.
I don't know where they went, but they must have been a little "whacky" too!

Temps rose during the ride and the high temps per computer readouts
were 113F, 112F & 118F. These were encountered on the return leg in
Pauma Valley and the climb up Cole Grade Road. It was mostly in the
high 90's and low 100's most of the day.
With some distribution of E-Caps, Vitamin B-6 and lots of water with
electrolytes, disaster was avoided!
There were only 4 major climbs on the route. The intense heat added to
their difficulty.
From now on, we'll all appreciate the cooling headwind rolling along
Camino del Rey and the SLR Bike Path after this cooker!

Our little group had one flat and Steve bent his front rim when he
decided to check out the rip-rap along the river side of the Bike Path
on the way back!

Jaime had his PowerTap dialed in and I guess he maxed out at 88 Watts
this trip! Something like that anyway?

John wore his new long sleeve "MaxKool" shirt for a test run. It
worked good when you soaked it in water too!

That's all I have to report... except these dudes are tough!

see ya soon on the next adventure,
kellyjay
