Took some video on the NCCC Sunday ride down to La Jolla Shores and edited to share the pluses and minus of these new facilities. Click here for the video in the NCCC Photo Gallery.

The Torrey uphill pluses are numerous. Wide separation from traffic and exhaust fumes. Two bike lanes allows easy passing as cyclists often climb at different rates. Only minor minus at this point is after only a short time, there is a fair amount of gravel over in the bike lane and pine straw from trees. The latter aren't a hazard, but if sticks are in the path we know that can be fatal (Sandy Sanderson picking up a stick in the front wheel by the golf course, going over the bars and breaking his neck). So, I hope this beautiful, widest bike lane in the county is swept regularly. Fantastic downhill on the other side with the new paving and striping.

I was surprised that our group of about a dozen really had no issues on the nice bike path adjacent to the I5 down from Genessee. But, the only minus which will need resolution is exiting the bike path in Sorrento Valley. You will see that the whole group is confused and we actually run a red light to get across the I5 on ramp to where we need to be. There was no traffic and we hadn't tripped the signal, so I hope we get a pass on the citation and I hope Caltrans and/or the City of San Diego put some kind of signal phasing at the bottom and maybe even a clear (maybe green stop-dash adjacent to the crosswalk) indication of where the cyclists should ride as they exit the path without using the crosswalk and messing up pedestrians. Still, this has the potential to alleviate the objections we all have to closing the northbound I5 onramp down to Sorrento Valley, a super safe speedy way to get down to Sorrento Valley from Genessee ALL the years that I commuted to North County from that area.
