This year's July NCCC century will go from OCRR to Coronado Island.
Please help me design the route. I am somewhat unfamiliar with the best roads from Mission Bay to Downtown. Here is what I have so far:

Would you consider Cabrillo Monument instead? No problems with navigating through downtown or ferry schedules. South through La Jolla, Bird Rock, Quivera Basin, Ocean Beach, up Venice to the monument.
Back through OB, SD river trail, PCH to Mission Bay, Rose Canyon trail to Gilman & UCSD, Sorrento Valley, 56 bike trail, either Rancho Bernardo to Escondido to OCRR, or through RSF to Manchester to San Elijo to OCRR.

I actually like the plan to show off our urban riding skills (if we have them) and taking the ferry. I've never done that, whereas I've gone to Cabrillo Monument many times. Going into the park at Cabrillo does cost money unless you have enough seniors with a lifetime pass to shepherd everyone in. It's Jeff's call - I think everyone will like something different by going south whatever the details are.

Jeff,
Ferry route is good.
Carbon bikes with 28mm + tires will float~!

I sent you an email with several mods and recommendations based on the Randos route: "Coronado Express", which gives riders the option of catching the ferry from either side of the Bay.(So they don't have to wait a hour for the next ferry)

see you soon,

Taking Kelly DeBoer's suggestions, here is a revised route, 103 miles.

Just a reminder to everyone planning on doing the Coronado Century ride to bring money or credit card to ride the ferry.  I beleive is $8.00 for a one way trip.

Hey Jeff,
Not sure if you are interested in looking at going west on the OB Bike path from Fiesta Island to Nimitz Blvd. Then to N Harbor Drive. You would be west of the airport on your way South. Airport traffic isn't too bad going in that direction. It is crazy going North though. Everyone seems to be in a hurry to get to the airport.
The ferry runs on the hour to Coronado and on the half hour to San Diego. $8.00 is correct one way.
Be aware of the Railroad tracks going South on Harbor Drive past NASSCO. Judy Frankel took a spill about 2 weeks ago. Someone from Karl's group ride also went down awhile back. The bike path steers you to a perpendicular path over the tracks. Just do not cut it.
There is a bike shop at the end of the new bike path in Chula Vista in case you need a fix or part. The Strand bike path will have all sorts of skaters, moms with strollers, runners, joggers, walkers, tourists. If you want some unobstructed rolling, use the highway. It has a large enough shoulder. Pick it up from the bird watchers' parking lot just North of IB.

Recommend the Coronado golf course as a place to eat. Your current route takes you through the neighborhood rather than along Glorietta Blvd. Glorrietta Blvd is an awesome ride from the bike path to the Landing. A very wide street with some traffic calming speed bumps that you can go around.
If you stay to your route, you'll need to turn right on Glorietta to get the the clubhouse. It will be on your left. If you go around Glorietta, you'll see it on your right as you are heading to the Coronado Landing from the Strand.
I sometimes have lunch there (I work at North Island) during the week. You can walk your bikes around to the back (or front) of the restraurant from the right side of the parking lot. Nice view of the golf course/bridge while you eat. Food is good. Prices are $7.00 - $10.00 with a drink. Maybe less. Maybe cheaper and smaller selection if you use the golfer's walk up window.
After you go under the Coronado bridge, you are taking the path along the bay to the Landing. There will be mucho people moseying around with kids and strollers and beach balls and animals and and... you get the idea. Have you ever heard of the "Weavers"? You might be part of that group if you go that way. Alternative is to go into the parking lot and out to Mullinex, to Glorietta, to 2nd, to A Ave, to the Landing.
Looks like you all are going to have a great day for that ride.

What a great route today. Really enjoyed going south and riding roads never ridden by me. The ferry ride was a most unique regroup - best ever. I think I finally digested that chocolate milk shake at mile 64. Really strong club turnout as well.
Thanks for the ride - Karl
