Century rides, "death rides", etc.

Hi, I'd like to dabble in doing some organized non-NCCC events such as centuries, double centuries, and those "death rides" that go over lots of mountains.  Is there a group of people in the club that do these rides?  Is there a mailing list for that?  For example if we were going to do something like the Solvang Double Century, I'd imagine it would make sense to carpool up and share the same hotel, and start together.  I'm not even sure if I need to register well ahead of time for these types of events.  I have no experience doing these types of rides.  I also don't really know which events are worth doing.

Talk to Greg Pschaida  or John Hopkins or Frank.  Jeff Gross does Century training for the club.  If you do one century with the group you can find other people that are signing up for other ones.  Some people were doing doubles at one time.  You need to find a doubles buddy to train with.

Nerius,

I have ridden a few centuries and have actually been wanting to do another one very soon.  So, if you have any you are interested in riding, let me know.  Sorry, but I have no interest in double centuries.  Wouldn't survive!

There's a list of pay rides at www.bikelink.com.

A good series is the Planet Ultra King of the Mountains in April and May. http://planetultra.com/KOM/index.html

Tour de Poway is in October but you probably ride most of the route for free already.

Hi Nerius,
You ask a good question since I did the Cool Breeze Dbl Metric on Saturday and then saw a whole group of NCCC cyclists at the finish.  I knew some were doing it but I never saw them at the start, especially since I got stuck in traffic getting there in the morning.

Here is another list that has 2 or 3 rides that aren't on link Frank provided that you might be interested in.

I'm with Ursala on the Double Centuries though, too much for me I think.

I'm tentatively doing the CF ride for Life, maybe the Tour De Poway, and possibly the Palm Springs Century.

Nerius and others - Just post ride interests on the Message Board. You'll notice that I keep the Upcoming Events menu (left side of every web page) looking forward a couple of months. I will be happy to add events at anyone's request, so that people know there's a group going (as for the Cool Breeze noted above). fwiw, I'm doing the White Mountain Double on Sep 10. You'll get to over 10,000 ft in the first 30 miles if you want to go for it, Nerius! John Hopkins was a go for this, originally, but his recent accident may mean I'm going NCCC solo, but would welcome any other company.

Karl - Are you doing the White Mountain for real?
It sounds like a fabulous ride, only with a few problems:
- Due to the extreme nature of the ride, you probably have to be in really terrific shape.  I'm not, yet.  Well maybe.
- It's quite a distance from San Diego.
- Cold weather gear required?  It's been a while since I wore stuff for cold weather, I'd have to dig around to see what I have.

Is this ride possible on a road bike with 23 wide tires and a lowest gear of 39x25?

karlos

For real. Jill (my wife) and I are starting a 2 week road trip where we are spending a week on the Umpqua River in Oregon, so this fits in with our meandering schedule - else, I would agree it's quite a distance. re: gears, my low is a 34x28 and I will be using it up to Schulman Grove! We have a favorite B&B in Bishop where we are staying for 3-4 days, hoping to do a nice hike after the double.

I also just posted, with this thread in mind, a link under Upcoming Events for the Temecula Valley Century on Oct. 8. That might generate some more general interest for those wishing to do an organized ride. It is close by, which makes it attractive. This is the inaugural version of this ride. It might be a good one to try to gather an NCCC group for a good 100+ miles.

Karl

Karl - Temecula Century sounds interesting, I might do it.
Also you might put the Tour of Poway on the Upcoming Events too.

I was going to do T.D.P. but the Temecula Valley Century will be a little more challenging. Anyone interested in doing it with me?

Yeah, I think I'm going to do the Temecula.

FYI - I registered for the Temecula Valley Century.
Ursula

Hmmm.  Have fun in Temecula - the route looks challenging, if only due to all the turns and backtracks!

I'm looking for some riders interested in tackling the forest route to Lake Elsinore on the Tough Rider 200 - see map here:http://www.sandiegorandonneurs.com/docs/permanents/ToughRider%20200k%20map%20090304.pdf  sometime after it cools down a bit.

The Pie ride is another great route - from Escondido through Valley Center, down into Pauma Valley, up the South Grade of Palomar, down the East grade, up Mesa Grande to Santa Ysabel, down old 78 to Ramona and back through Highland Valley.

Should be cool enough in late September/October . . .

OK, I just registered for the Temecula Century on Oct 8.
Since this is my first organized century in the United States, I'm not really sure how things work.

On their website it says: "We recommend that you PICKUP YOUR Ride BAG during the PRE-EVENT MIXER FRIDAY OCTOBER 7th..."
What the frick is a "ride bag"?  I obviously won't be there on Oct 7th.

Also, "...packet pick up will be available between the hours of 5:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. at the Information Booth at Registration."
What's in this packet?  The ride starts at 7:00, so if I arrive at 6:35 and miss the 6:30 cutoff to pick up the "packet", I won't get the "packet"?  Lol.

How will I know where to make turns on the course if I'm by myself?

Are there refreshment stands along the course?
