For those who plan to climb Mt Palomar on Dan Crane's upcoming ride on Oct 20.

Here is a link to my 3 roundabout videos from the Pete Penseyres Bonsall ride today - click on it

i. Northbound on Valley Center Rd, turning left onto 76. Note sidewalk option is a little farther right than on most modern roundabouts due to the size of this roundabout - larger than most to accommodate 25mph. This was the most dangerous turn for residents and Harrah's Casino folks.

ii. Westbound downhill, turning left onto Valley Center Rd. No sharrows yet. Can go fast, whee!!! I needed to start farther up the hill as there is a Bikes May Use Full Lane and sharrows FAR in advance of the roundabout as there should be per our recommendations.

iii. Eastbound uphill, entrance to roundabout still under construction, nice sharrows in the lane very early.

A little history on how this roundabout came about. With the casino on Valley Center Rd and high speed traffic on Hwy 76, there have been fatalities at that intersection, mostly t-bones which of course are completely eliminated (along with head-ons) by adding the roundabout there. It's a slightly bigger circle than most so traffic can move at 25 mph in the circle. Pete Penseyres and I worked with Caltrans District 11 on the design and provided lots of input, most importantly insisting on sharrows FAR before the roundabout entrance to get the experienced cyclists (which most all who ride out there are) into the proper and safest position to fly through the roundabout (we can go 30-35 on the downhill part when the circle is clear because we're skinner ;) ). Pete attended one of the community outreach workshops where 80% were AGAINST that roundabout (deja vu?) and I wrote the letter ~4 years ago for the San Diego County Bike Coalition in support of the roundabout with the design features we suggested to accommodate cyclists. This is a win for both motorists (mostly) and cyclists.
