Previous topic - Next topic
Scott and I have been riding on most Tuesdays and Thursdays for a while, and periodically we run into other club members along the way, so I though that I would toss this out.

Anyone interested in a Tuesday/Thursday informal bike ride ?

Here are my thoughts:
 1)   Meeting place San Luis Rey bike path entrance at College Ave
 2)   Start time 4:45pm
 3)   25 ? 35 mile easier run on Thursday
       a.   Route ideas:
              i.   Bike path to Oside, to Carlsbad or into Camp Pendleton
ii.   Alternate routes to/from the beach
 4)   25-45  longer and/or more hilly ride on Tuesday
       a.   Route ideas:
              i.   Head east to Bonsall and West Lilac areas
ii.   Sleeping Indian back and forth
iii.   Old 395 and West Lilac
iv.              Toss in Circle R if we are up to it
iv.   South on College, Cannon, to Swammis, back on SLR bike path
 5)   Same pace as Saturday regular ride (middle of the pack, definitely not the top dog pace)
 6)   Plan to get back to the bike path (out of traffic) by dusk
              a.   May need to leave earlier on the longer runs

Communication options in order of (my) preference:
 1)   We can just show up at the prescribed time and confirm the ride plan
              a.   Allows flexibility to address current weather and the preferences of those
who actually show up.  I guess that the option to make a last moment change always exists.
              b.   If we assume the ride parameters above, everyone should know what to expect
 2)   I can post the ride info on this message board
             a.   Disclaimer: I will try, but may miss the deadline occasionally if life is too hectic
             b.   I can post a list of routes
 3)   We can assemble an email list, and I can send out ride info the night before
             a.   same disclaimer

Let me know if you are interested.  And give me your thoughts.

Guys and Gals,

It was a good ride yesterday, temp was perfect.  Once on Sleeping Indian, the cars disapear and life is good.   Nice to be out in the fresh air.  The hills at a moderate pace were great training for the Saturday rides and made it back by 7pm no problem.

Thursday will be a relatively flat run so will focus on endurance? short pushes up the rollers to practice(pretend) keeping up with the big dogs?. Dinner on the pier watching the sun set.  (enjoying life, thats why we do it)

Guys and Gals,
?.we turn down Avenida Santa Barbara and can hear something in the distance?.  As we coast down the hill the music gets louder, and when we get to the pier, the beach is alive?  Wow a band set up on the beach cranking 70s music.  That and a cold Fat Tire made fixing a flat and the 30 something miles of head winds worth it.   How lucky are we?
More training next week.

Guys and Gals,
Tuesday/Thursday rides for this week:
Tuesday 18 Aug  - North River, up W Lilac, down Old Castle, back Camino del Rey, North River, 38 Miles. Should be back around 7:45-8pm
Thursday 20 Aug ? Slow and easy up College to Cannon, then pace it up on the flats going north up the coast, around the harbor, back up San Luis Rey Bike Path, 28 Miles.  Should be back about 7pm

4:45 Start at the San Luis Rey River Bike Path at College Av
No drop rule still in effect.

I struggled a bit on that big hill on today?s (Saturday) regular ride, so we need to work on that Tuesday.  Spin a little, gear up a little, up out of the saddle a little, pushing and backing off to keep the overall speed up, and allowing your heart rate and body to recover some before pushing again, without pushing beyond the point of no return.  It takes forever to get to the top when you just spin it in low/low.  Get the body trained to work harder, recover, and do it again.

On Thursday we?ll practice our pace lines on the flats.  The Peloton can move much faster than the single rider!   Share the load while keeping the group running at a moderate pace.  Pull for a minute and drop to the back of the line.
Key points for a pace line: Ride in a predictable manner steady and strait, hold the speed as constant as possible. The closer that you get to the rider in front of you, the more you will benefit from the slipstream effect, stay tight with the rider in front, but not too close.  Stay alert, obstacles come up fast when you are riding fast in a tight group.  Start at about 24?-36? behind the rear tire of the person in front, and as you build trust in your skills and the skills of the rider in front, you can pull in a little tighter.

Disclaimer: I am no expert, but I am willing to practice, and you are welcome to join me.
